Outdoor Pillow Size Guide: Choosing Squares and Lumbar Pillows

Square and lumbar mid-century botanical outdoor pillows on a patio sofa

The right outdoor pillow size depends on the furniture, not simply the size that looks best in a product photo. A pillow needs enough presence to soften a deep patio seat without crowding the person using it. This guide covers the most useful square and lumbar sizes for outdoor chairs, loveseats, sofas and benches.

Outdoor pillow size chart

Furniture Useful pillow size Simple arrangement
Compact dining or balcony chair 16 × 16 in. One square pillow
Standard lounge chair 18 × 18 in. One square or one lumbar
Deep club chair 20 × 20 in. One generous square
Outdoor loveseat 18 × 18 or 20 × 20 in. Two squares or two squares plus one lumbar
Three-seat patio sofa 18 × 18 and 20 × 20 in. Two larger anchors with smaller accents
Bench 20 × 14 in. lumbar One centered lumbar or two spaced lumbars

16 × 16 versus 18 × 18 outdoor pillows

A 16-inch pillow is a light accent. It suits upright dining chairs, narrow balcony furniture and layered arrangements where it will sit in front of a larger pillow. An 18-inch square has more visual weight and works on most standard lounge chairs and loveseats.

When to use a 20-inch square

A 20-inch pillow is most useful on deep seating. It fills the corner of a substantial patio sofa and gives a person something supportive to lean against. On a small chair, however, it can consume too much of the seat. Always compare the pillow measurement with the usable width between the chair arms.

Why lumbar pillows work outdoors

A 20 × 14 lumbar adds lower-back support without covering the entire back cushion. The horizontal shape also breaks up a row of square pillows. On a bench, one lumbar can look more intentional than several small squares.

The Mid-Century Botanical Outdoor Pillow is available in 16 × 16, 18 × 18, 20 × 20 and 20 × 14 lumbar sizes, so the same artwork can move through an arrangement without introducing another pattern.

Keep the arrangement comfortable

For a loveseat, begin with two matching squares and stop there if the seat is compact. For a wider sofa, place a larger square at each outer corner and add one lumbar near the center. Leave enough open space that guests do not need to remove every pillow before sitting down.

Material still matters

Outdoor sizing only works when the construction suits the setting. These pillows use spun polyester with UV- and water-resistant qualities, double-sided printing, a sewn-closed construction and included filling. Water resistant does not mean waterproof, so bring them into a covered area during severe weather and allow damp pillows to dry fully.
